From the very beginning, the history and study of the American Revolution has been bound up with the national identity of the United States, and thus with the country’s present needs. In recent years, the competing imperatives of activists and journalists at both edges of our ideological spectrum have produced warring narratives of the American founding: slavery versus liberty, original sin versus germinal gift, conclave of villains versus garden of heroes. Both of these approaches owe more to politics than to history. As we approach the quarter-millennium mark, how can we equip ourselves and our students with an understanding of the revolutionary era that is rigorous, complex, and above all, true to the evidence?
This event is sponsored by the Center for Constitutional Design at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at ASU and by The Jack Miller Center.

Civic Storytelling Series
Clean Elections, in partnership with the Arizona Civic Coalition, spent time with Arizona’s local community leaders to learn what inspired them to be civically engaged and give back to their community. This diverse group of leaders shared their civic autobiography and/or read their favorite story in an effort to inspire and educate students about civic engagement. These videos were developed specifically for educators and students to experience in the classroom.

Sandra Day O’Connor Celebration Weekend
September 25, 1981, marks the day Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. She was appointed by President Reagan and unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate to serve on the bench. Justice O’Connor served for 25 years, retiring in 2006. In 2019, Governor Doug Ducey designated September 25th as Sandra Day O’Connor Day, 38 years after the Arizona-born and raised Justice O’Connor was sworn in as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Justice O’Connor was no stranger to community and public service. As a tribute, we ask you to spend some time the weekend of September 24th and 25th giving back to your community and the greater public good.
To read more about Sandra Day O’Connor’s Arizona roots and life-long legacies, visit the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy.
